Final Thoughts

Life of Brian is not a perfect movie by any means. There is racism and sexism prevalent throughout almost the entire movie. The best example of the racism is the three wise men again, where one of the Pythons is just in blatant blackface, while the best example of the sexism in the movie is the rampant use of men playing women to be as annoying and hysterical as possible. Life of Brian does some things well, like having male nudity to contrast the oversaturation of female nudity in the business, or the respecting of pronouns of a transgendered person in the movie, but these moments get overshadowed by these bigoted and hurtful beliefs. This movie inspired a generation of comedians and movie makers, however there are parts of this movie that inspired those people to continue the long tradition of sexism and racism just because they thought it was funny.
Life of Brian has its faults, but as a toga film movie, it is a classic. It takes all the classic tropes and scenes that the audience of the time came to know and love, then beautifully subverts them in some incredibly funny moments. It also perpetuates hurtful stereotypes and beliefs under the guise of jokes. Even though Life of Brian is full of faults, it is still a landmark in the toga movie genre and should be revered as such.
